As the university and community mourned, University officials had to start thinking about the next season, and how they would rebuild their Aces team from nothing.
After a nationwide search, the University hired DuPage Junior College Coach Dick Walters to lead the rebuild as the new Aces head coach. Assistant Coach Stafford Stephenson agreed to remain on staff, and immediately, they began recruiting the new team. Thanks to a waiver from the NCAA, transfers to UE were allowed to play without sitting out the traditional year.
The result was a team comprised of Division I transfers, junior college transfers, several new freshmen - and no seniors, who took the Roberts Stadium floor for the first time that November in a scrimmage against Poland’s national team.
"Watching them take the floor for the first time sent shivers down your spine," said Laura Gottschling-Buthod, who called the game for campus radio station 91.5 FM.
